What to Expect
Experience the perfect merge of classic art and majestic architecture in the Arabian Peninsula’s first universal museum. Designed by the award-winning French architect, Jean Nouvel, Louvre Abu Dhabi is an impressive spectacle on water. Its legendary name says it all! Backed by loans from legendary museums like Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Centre Pompidou, Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi is a collaborative effort between the governments of Abu Dhabi and France.
Spanning over 65,000 square feet at Saadiyat Cultural District, Louvre Abu Dhabi showcases a vast spectrum of objects that depict both ancient and the latest in the contemporary artistic expressions. With its exhibits presented chronologically, it will take you through four distinct periods, from archeology and the birth of Islam to the classical age and modern era. Apart from a dedicated section for kids, there is approximately 20,000 square feet of space for temporary exhibitions.
Fascinating displays apart, the core specialty of Louvre Abu Dhabi is undoubtedly its intricate and multi-layered geometric lace dome, enhanced by thousands of star-like cladding patterns. This is inspired by the region’s ancient construction techniques, such as the traditional Falaj water system and interweaved palm leaves. The resulting structure provides elegant perforations, creating a stunning contrast of sunlight and shade. This makes for some cool insta shots.
Museum Galleries
The 12 museum galleries are chronologically arranged in an inspiring manner, narrating the story of humanity with an artistic filter. Through an incredible collection of art installations, each of these 12 chapters unveils commonalities that have existed throughout the history of humanity.
Exhibitions
The Louvre hosts 4 temporary exhibitions every year. These exhibitions are the result of a unique collaboration between Abu Dhabi and France. In partnership with 13 French Museum partners, Louvre Abu Dhabi will bring together exemplary art for visitors to the Middle East.
Boutique Souvenir Store
However small it may be, grab a souvenir from the snug boutique shop on your way out to cherish this visit to the first Arabian Universal Museum.
Restaurant and Cafe
Rest your tired legs and contemplate the art you just witnessed over coffee and a plate of sumptuous bites before you leave the premises. The eateries are designed by Jean Nouvel himself and are nothing short of extraordinary.
